The Navy Pier Flyover is an elevated path providing a dedicated, grade-separated trail section for safer walking and biking along the most heavily used portion of the Lakefront Trail. The Lakefront Trail is a vital part of the city’s transportation network, serving thousands of users daily. The project provides world-class, innovative bridge design, as well as eliminates several critical pinch points and at grade crossings. The bridge follows a serpentine alignment, necessary to maneuver through the urban land¬scape already well-established with parks, streets, buildings, and waterways. Path improvements incorporated architectural elements and an aesthetic, irrigated landscaping. An environmentally-friendly system including green catch basins and a bio-swale complimented the bridge.

The project included extensive traffic maintenance, trail detours, and temporary pavements to allow full trail and roadway access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. Electrical components include a comprehensive LED lighting system and conduits for lighting power supply embedded within the concrete curb or enclosed within the steel column sections.

SINGH provided construction inspection services for the north segment of the lakefront path from Ohio Street Beach to north of the Ogden Slip. SINGH’s responsibilities included construction inspection and documentation for the construction of the steel bridge structure. Additional responsibilities included shop drawing/submittal review for completeness, accu¬racy and compliance with the requirements of the project documents; monitor/update material certifications; and inspect steel bridge erection, concrete, electrical, landscaping, irrigation, and drainage construction work.
